How to Use Custom Fields for Campaign Segmentation

Table of Contents

Thanks to custom fields, you can segment your subscribers, thus creating highly targeted campaigns.

Inside a campaign’s editor, click the Schedule button on the top right. You’ll be redirected to a section where you can filter your contacts via groups and/or custom fields.

Choose Selected Subscribers from the Recipients menu. From the Choose a filter drop-down menu, select Custom fields. A new Choose a field menu will appear on the right. Select one of the existing custom fields you’ve already created. Then, choose an Operator to determine the criteria for the custom field values. Depending on the field type, the operator options are different.

Text Type

If the custom field type is Text, you can choose from numerous operators that filter the custom fields differently.

  • is—adds contacts whose custom field value is an exact match to the filter value
  • is not—excludes all contacts whose custom field value matches the filter value
  • is blank—includes contacts that have a blank value for the selected custom field
  • is not blank—excludes all contacts that have a blank value for the selected custom field
  • contains—adds all contacts that include the filter value keyword in their custom field values
  • does not contain—excludes all contacts that contain the filter value keyword in their custom field values

Dropdown Type

If the custom field type is Dropdown, you can set a condition to filter contacts based on the predefined responses of the custom field.

  • is—includes contacts that have selected the predefined response you’ve chosen for the filter.
  • is not—excludes the contacts that have selected the response you’ve chosen for the filter.
  • is blank—includes all contacts that left the custom field unanswered.
  • is not blank—adds contacts that provided any of the custom field responses.
