PHP 7.2 RC Available on All SiteGround Servers

We are quite excited to see PHP 7.2 coming. It is expected to bring some considerable speed, security and efficiency improvement. As always, you can count on SiteGround to provide you with the hottest technologies as they come. The latest release candidate of PHP 7.2 has just been made available on our servers. To learn how to test it safely read below.

Being still in a release candidate state, PHP 7.2 already has all the planned new features developed but is not completely bug-free. Additionally, it introduces a lot of changes from the previous PHP versions (see the changelog of this RC version). That is why we strongly recommend that you do not use it on a production environment, as it may simply break your site. The best way to play around with it safely is to:

  1. Create a staging copy of your live site
  2. Use the PHP version manager in your cPanel to apply PHP 7.2 RC to the staging copy only.

Thus, you will easily see if there are issues in the code of your site, that could prevent your future move to the new and better PHP.

During our internal tests all freshly installed WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal behaved well on PHP 7.2. However, when additional plugins, themes, and extensions came into play, we saw more errors because of PHP functions or syntax, that were already deprecated in 7.2 version. We are positive that all popular and well-supported themes and plugins will soon update their codebase to align it with PHP 7.2.  So, go ahead and get ready to take advantage of all the benefits of the new version once it is officially released.

Thanks Hristo. would love to get the performance gain. Just a bit scared of staging and pushing to live, had some previous issues there (mainly my understanding of files). and when in staging things seem very much slower... so actually working on site live. However, I am a happy siteground customer and appreciate that siteground gets to new technology first (from hosting environment). So, keep it up.

You can view some benchmarking results in this post https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=PHP-7.2-Beta-1. The improvements are very minor, but still better than nothing :)

Hey Hristo, this is great! As well as pushing the latest versions of PHP, is SiteGround also looking at the possibility of upgrading shared hosting to Litespeed?

Thanks Hristo. for the information. Siteground is always on the edge. In this case, why Siteground don't specify exactly with version of PhP 7.2 you are running on Siteground? The testing work is almost useless without this information. Last time, with the first 7.0 releases, was correctly displayed RC1 RC2 or RC6 on "Versione PHP manager". This time you I see only Php 7.2.0 on cPanel's "Versione PHP manager". I would like to now if it is installed RC3 or RC6 or something else, it makes a big difference.

PHP 7.1 and 7.2 are available for selection. However, we constantly update the minor versions thus we keep it this way in the interface. You can make a phpinfo() file and check exactly what version you're on.

Hello, Enrico. Thanks for the update. We have recently upgraded the PHP 7.2 to version 7.2.0 which is now stable and it is no longer a release candidate. Thanks for the feedback and from now on we will strive to provide the exact RC when we upload a new PHP version on our servers :)

Are you considering adding LiteSpeed as an option?

At this point we do not plan adding it as an option on our hosting environment.
